Requirements for Advanced and Honors to Receive an Award
This is the list of requirements in which students will need to complete throughout the year. Any student that completes all of these tasks will be recognized at our final end of the year concert/awards ceremony.
Richardson Honor Orchestra Member
Good behavior - the student must not have had any discipline actions throughout the entire school year. Good behavior is expected not only in the orchestra room, but in concert situations, field trips, any function where the student represents N.R.M.S. Students that are placed in I.S.S. or alternative school for any reason have failed to complete this task.
Solo/Ensemble – the student must perform a solo at the E.P.I.S.D. Solo and Ensemble completion which is held in February. The rating the student receives is inconsequential to their completing this task.
Audience Participation
the student must attend three concerts over the school year in which they are NOT a performer. This means that if all orchestras are performing a joint concert, the student does not receive credit for this, because they are a performer. Students can attend concerts that are performed by the school choir or band, or any concert held at another school. We will constantly update the “Gigs” board in the orchestra room to inform students when and where concerts are being held. In order to receive credit for this the student must bring a program from the concert or bring a list of music that was performed, with a signature by one of the performers (signature by performer is optional). We are open to suggestions for concerts, be creative.
Attendance – the student attends all performances given by the orchestra and any rehearsals that are scheduled outside of the normal school day.
Eligibility – While orchestra is considered a curricular activity by the TEA, there are occasions when an event may be considered Extra-Curricular. Curricular activities are not subject to the “No Pass, No Play” law. Curricular events are treated as an extension of the classroom curriculum as set forth by the state. Examples of curricular activities include sectionals, all after school rehearsals, concerts(FALL, WINTER and SPRING). Therefore, these are graded and mandatory events. (per calendar)
Extra- Curricular activities include: Festivals, contests and field trips. These are the events subject to the “No Pass/No Play” rules.
Texas No Pass/No Play states: Students academic grades must be 70% or higher in order to participate in extra curricular activities.
Report – the student must type a one page report describing the life and important works of any classical or jazz composer or musician. The student must receive approval by the teacher beforehand.
Citizenship -the student can meet this requirement simply by doing something nice or helpful for another student or a teacher, without expecting an immediate reward. This can include helping to clean the room, helping to set up or tear down for a concert or anything along those lines.
Scales -in order to meet this requirement the student must play their C, D and G Major two octave scales by memory. There will be specific times during class when the student will have the opportunity to test these off, however the student will have until the middle of the last nine weeks in order to play them at 100% for this award credit.
